RegenEn Solar LLC Announces Availability Of Renewable Energy Credits For Its Customers

Louisville, KY -- In a move that will fundamentally change the economics of solar power, Louisville based RegenEn Solar LLC announced today that it has partnered with Sol Systems of Washington, DC (www.solsystemscompany.com), to purchase Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) from customers that have solar installed. What this means is that customers will be getting paid to go solar and that systems could pay for themselves within 8 years, even without taking into account the amount the system increases the value of the property. Once the solar system has paid for itself, a customer can expect the panels to produce an additional 30 years of free electricity.

Sol Systems defines SRECs as:

RegenEn Solar Press Release: Renewable Energy Credits (RECs)

The Solar Energy Professionals.TM

"A tradable credit that represents all the clean energy benefits of electricity generated from a solar electric system. Each time a solar electric system generates 1000kWh (1MWh) of electricity, an SREC is issued which can then be sold or traded separately from the power.

"SRECs are then purchased by electrical utilities in order to meet a state’s Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requirements. SRECs are therefore commodities; their value quantified by (1) the state RPS requirements for which they are purchased, (2) the value of the state’s Solar Alternative Compliance Payment (ACP), and (3) the supply and demand of SRECs in that specific state. Because SRECs may be produced in one state and utilized in another, their values can vary dramatically."

Here is Sol System's press release announcing that they are now operating in Kentucky and Indiana:

The following is an example of the new economics of owning a solar panel system with SRECs . The amount paid per SREC has been changed to protect Nondisclosure Agreements and all other calculations are based on estimates and are not guarantees.

Sol Systems would pay you (the customer that has solar installed) $180/SREC or megawatt-hour (mWh) (or 18 cents/kWh) of solar power produced. They would sign a 5 year contract with you and pay you each quarter with the option to renew after that. Therefore, you would be able to sell your kWh back to Louisville Gas & Electric (LG&E) at 7 cents per kWh and then 18 cents per kWh on top of that, for a total of 25 cents per kWh.

That would mean that a 3.2 kW system that produces around 5.4 mWh of power (5,400 kWh) each year could yield a payment to you (the customer) of $974 per year and you would receive a check for $243 per quarter. That breaks down to about $81 per month. That could pay for your remaining LG&E electric bill if the solar system doesn't cover 100% of your electric usage. Or, if you finance the solar panel system, you could cover the majority of the loan payment that would be around $96 per month, especially with interest rates as low as they are currently.
